Future Learning Space – Zaatari Refugee Camp

Zaatari Refugee Camp, Jordan

مخيم اللاجئين الزعتري، الأردن

The Zaatari Refugee Camp (Zaatari) was established in July 2012.  It is located in Jordan approximately 13 kilometres from the Syrian Border and is the largest camp in the Middle East (UNHCR, 2016; Aljazeera News, 2015).

In October 2016, there were approximately 45,000 children from Syria living in the Zaatari Refugee Camp representing 57% of the entire population in the camp. Of this approximately 29, 500 are of school age (UNHCR, 2016).

According to the UNHCR 1 in 3 school aged children do not attend school and 13% of children are engaged in child labour, mainly in the markets within Zaatari. The dire situation families find themselves in unfortunately means a third of the families in Zaatari are not able to send their children to school (UNHCR, 2016, Aljazeera News, 2015).

The nine schools in Zaatari operate on a double shift basis – the girls study in the morning and the boys attend school in the afternoon.  There are approximately 20,700 children enrolled in school.  This unfortunately means there are approximately 8,800 school aged children who are not enrolled in school (UNHCR, 2016, Aljazeera News, 2015).

This future learning space is for refugee children who are not able to go to school to give them an opportunity to gain an education and transform their lives.

As Aoife McDonnell, External Relations United Nations Human Rights Commissioner  stated,  “we will lose a generation if we don’t invest in education” (UNHCR, 2016)
